Innovation & Technology
Emissions to the air are subject to stringent environmental requirements and all new facilities are constructed with the best technology available.
Our continuous improvement in environmental performance is a direct result of the research we have made in environmental related technology projects over the past several years, our refinery innovative design has become one of the most efficient and lowest emitting facilities of its kind in world.
Some of our most recent research were focused on sulphur recovery technology, which has led to substantial reductions in sulphur dioxide emissions. More recently our focus is on further reducing Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, with the construction of many projects at our refinery and terminals - some of which are in advance of anticipated regulations.
Over the past several years, our research and refinery design has aggressively targeted the reduction of sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions through improved processes and the installment of new control technology. These efforts have led to an overall reduction of SO2 emissions by 55 percent .The latest technology of tail gas or sulphur recovery unit, which chemically strips out the sulphur from the tail gases and transforms it into a molten form of sulphur that can then be recycled. Due to the additional recovery of sulphur from this latest innovative design unit, the refinery’s SO2 emissions are among the lowest of all refineries, and approximately one-fifth of the permissible emissions rate.
Due to a significant innovation technology and upgrade refinery process design we were able to build and upgrade refinery process to produce cleaner, low sulphur fuels ahead of regulations. Further improvements allowed us to lead the way with the production of ultra-low sulphur diesel and gasoline products. We upgraded refinery process began producing ultra-low sulphur diesel & gasoline, which has a sulphur content of a 97 per cent reduction from today's industry standard .We were one of the first leading design the production of PRO HEAT Ultra Low Sulphur Heating Oil.
We recognize that the emission of greenhouse gases due to human activity is impacting our global climate. This issue requires action by us all. While we provide our customers with cleaner transportation fuels, we also strive to do so with the least impact to our environment– particularly by reducing our carbon footprint.
Our carbon reduction goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, in alignment with GHG reduction targets agreed upon at the 2009 UNFCC Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. In 2011 we were successful in obtaining a 13 percent reduction in our GHG emissions intensity and we are continuing to investigate new ways to further reduce our emissions.
We work to reduce our carbon footprint through achieving greater energy efficiency, in order to produce less carbon dioxide (CO2) in the first place.
Petrotech Innovative Technology’s objective is to operate without harm to people and environment, and advanced technology handle the purification processes.
We purify waste streams and are working to reduce emissions to water. Our goal is to operate without harming the environment.
Petrotech Innovative Technology’s goal is to operate without harming the environment, and we have developed and designed different cleaning processes for the various waste streams.
We have led the development of the EIF (Environmental Impact Factor) risk assessment tool which is now used by the authorities and by the industry. The EIF shows which components in the discharge water are most harmful, and it enables measurement, monitoring and comparison of discharges to sea from the various fields. The EIF thereby provides a good basis for finding optimum environmental solutions for each project or field.
In addition, Petrotech Innovative Technology is working to reduce the use of chemicals, and we are continuously seeking more environment-friendly versions.
Petrotech Innovative Technology is continuously and extensively engaged in the development and testing of relevant cleaning technologies and new chemicals, and we have been a pioneer in developing and using hydrocyclones for cleaning the water.
In Petrotech Innovative Technology, we're finding new ways of handling oily drill cuttings, waste oil and treating chemical waste. These are some of the initiatives on our priority list.
- Zero discharge and total fluid management:
This technology is needed to satisfy the most stringent requirement for waste, which calls for none of it to be discharged. The zero-discharge standard represents an important condition for opening new acreage to oil and gas in environmentally hypersensitive areas, such as the waters and in the Sea.
- Chemical waste discharges
A unique user-friendly system for accurately calculating the quantities of production chemicals discharged at sea has been developed by Petrotech Innovative Technology researchers on the basis of advanced laboratory studies.
A great variety of chemicals are used in many aspects of hydrocarbon production, and not least for guaranteeing that crude oil meets market specifications.
Although such substances are essential, some of the spent chemical waste inevitably becomes incorporated in produced water. Much of this is discharged to the sea.
Knowing which chemicals are being discharged and the exact quantities involved is essential in complying with the requirement for zero harmful discharges set by Petrotech Innovative Technology and the research center.
Petrotech Innovative Technology has therefore developed a superior user-friendly technique to overcome some of the basic problems.
This provides not only more reliable results, but also the opportunity to focus on which chemicals are potentially most harmful to the natural environment and should therefore be replaced by more environment-friendly substitutes.
The division of polluting chemicals between water and oil – known as the distribution factor – was previously estimated from laboratory studies using standard water and a model oil called octanol. And this is where the problem lies.
To get closer to the true position, Petrotech Innovative Technology has carried out experimental work on 35 of the most important chemicals using real crude oil and genuine produced water.
The results are revealing, since the distribution factors found using real systems differ significantly from those based on laboratory standards.
Group researchers have also systematised their results and simplified the calculation of distribution factors in a spreadsheet-based mass balance model.
This model is so easy to use that it allows Petrotech Innovative Technology’s environmental coordinators – rather than its research specialists – to produce the annual voluminous field reports required by the authorities.
Environmental monitoring is essential to enable us to achieve our target of zero harmful discharges. By integrating Environmental Monitoring into our daily operations, Petrotech Innovative Technology is a becoming a leading innovator in finding Minimum Environmental Impact solutions for the future.
The three most important pillars of this work are risk evaluation, use of technology, and monitoring. Before we go into a new area, we gather thorough background information about the environment. This forms the basis for risk evaluations and to identify any changes after our activities have been started.
Monitoring surveys are also carried out after the activity is completed to ensure that the environment is returned to its normal condition. The results of the environmental monitoring provide not only information about the state of the environment, but also important information that can be used to calibrate our risk models so that our predictions can become more accurate in future.
The need for good knowledge is important to select the best environmental and cost effective solutions in relation to each individual activity.
Our research and development efforts are establishing new ways to put advanced technologies to work protecting sensitive nature, delicate coastal waters and the full diversity of nature life everywhere we operate.
As our search for new resources expands, the need for effective techniques to enable operations in environmentally sensitive areas grows. Petrotech Innovative Technology new solutions and monitoring techniques are making a difference in balancing operations and environmental considerations.
